LG Smartphones will get Ice Cream Sandwich

LG articulated its up-gradation plans offering the latest version of Android- Android 4.0 or Ice Cream Sandwich- for its Smart-phones on Monday through its Facebook page.  The up-gradation will happen in two phases, in the second and third quarter of 2012 respectively.

LG Optimus LTE, Prada by LG 3.0, LG Optimus 2X, LG Optimus Sol, LG myTouch Q and LG Eclipse are the models for which the up-gradation will be available in the second quarter ((April-June) of 2012. The process will be continued during the third quarter (July-September) of 2012 for the following models; LG Optimus 3D, LG Optimus Black, LG Optimus Big, LG Optimus Q2, LG Optimus EX.

In India only some of the above mentioned LG smart-phones are launched as LG have custom versions for each country like LG Optimus LTE as Nitro HD and Optimus 3D as Thrill 4G on AT&t in US.  The exact roll out date for the up-gradation is not confirmed yet. LG says “the dates will vary by the market, as each country can have different requirements, depending upon the carrier and smart-phone model”.

LG’s declaration regarding the latest OS update prompted some negative response from the consumers, they says “they haven’t got the Gingerbread up-gradation yet, even though the company promised a year back but the actual roll out happed only in August”.  This implies the fact that Android update is a time consuming process as it has to pass through Google, the Phone maker, and the carrier before it reaches the actual consumers, unlike Apple which monitors the whole progression and is able to roll out the update in a very short span of time.

All other major players like Samsung, Motorola and HTC has already declared their plans for updating their smart-phones with Android 4.0. We believe the struggling LG smart-phones will find a path to survive and compete in the world of Smartphone by this new up-gradation.

What to Expect from Microsoft in 2012

Microsoft had more than a satisfying year in 2011, with the release of IE9, and Office 365, and Windows 7 reaching its 500 millionth license sale. Moreover, their revenue exceeded expectations, thanks to the Office package, and the Xbox consoles. "Throughout fiscal 2011, we delivered to market a strong lineup of products and services, which translated into double-digit revenue growth and operating margin expansion" said Microsoft Chief Financial Officer, Peter Klein. And the good just keeps coming. Here are five things that you could look forward to from Microsoft in 2012:

Xbox moving further to the world of TV:

Sporting the new Metro-look on its Xbox Live service earlier this month, Microsoft subtly hinted to gamers about the migration of live TV to their game consoles. Customers of Verizon’s Fios Cable TV had the privilege of choosing from 26 live television channels which included Comedy Central, HBO, and Nickelodeon. Few other partners of Microsoft are offering live programming through Xbox too, although a number of partner apps are available exclusively to Xbox Live Gold Membership customers.

Customized search through social connections:

Microsoft’s deal with Facebook saw its implementation in May, with the search engine Bing becoming customized socially. This meant that if you are trying to decide about a movie and your friend ‘liked’ it on Facebook,  he can rank it up on your search results via Bing. The Bing team says it plans to extend the plans of going social.

Windows 8 on Tablets:

Microsoft, coming in to the tablet platform two years after Apple, has strong competitors in this field, including Google, and Amazon. The Kindle fire from Amazon soon became the first tablet (outside iPad family) which acquired purpose as an e-book reader and a tool for reading online content with color display. Microsoft, however, has switched to the Metro interface and is pushing customers to buy the Windows 8 OS that is both touch-friendly for tablets and phones and yet keyboard and mouse-friendly for PCs and laptops.

Windows phone reaching the third place:

According to Harry McCracken, Founder and Editor of Technologizer, Nokia could be capable of building a sleek and capable device that flatters the great software that the Windows 7.5 Mango OS is. The OS has further received applaud for its animation and app integration, with about 40,000 third-party apps to its credit in about a year.

 Pressing charges for patents:

Microsoft so far has been able to persuade Android handset manufacturers such as HTC and Wistron to pay up instead of having to meet the conglomerate in court. Microsoft alleges that the Android mobile operating system violates the patents filed and granted to it earlier. Next year, Microsoft’s suit against Barnes&Noble will be taking up the spotlight as the Nook e-reader uses the Android OS.

LG Launching World's Biggest OLED TV

LG is all set to launch world’s biggest OLED TV panel in 2012 at Customer Electronics Show in January. Earlier Sony came up with 11.1 inch SonyDrive XEL-1, the first OLED TV that cost around 69600. But still, the biggest ultra thin TV is yet to come and LG has made it possible by creating a 55-inch ultra-thin OLED TV with 100,000:1 contrast ratio.

LG's OLED TV

“Our objective has always been to actively define and lead emerging display technology markets,” said Sang Beom Han, CEO and Executive Vice President of LG Display. “Although OLED technology is seen as the future of TV display, the technology has been limited to smaller display sizes and by high costs, until now. LG Display’s 55-inch OLED TV panel has overcome these barriers.”

Organic Light Emitting Diodes (OLED) are more advanced and has more advantage over existing LCDs.  The OLED display transmits better image quality even in low ambient light and it is lighter and thinner compared to LCDs. As per the company, the 55-inch OLED model that is 5 millimeters thick would be the largest OLED display so far with the white OLED technology giving the best-quality images. The price and availability details are not yet disclosed.

LG’s Press release states “The panel adopts an Oxide TFT technology for backplane which is different from a Low Temperature Poly Silicon (LTPS) type generally used in existing small-sized OLED panels. Moreover, the Oxide TFT type produces identical image quality to high performance of LTPS base panels at significantly reduced investment levels”.

However, Samsung is also planning to unveil its 55-inch OLED TV at CES in 2012. So, LG will be facing a big time competition with this huge player in the TV market for this vertical too.

LG Smartphone 'Fantasy' with Windows Mango

LG is coming up with a new Smartphone with Window Phone 7.5 (Mango) OS named as ‘Fantasy’ (for the time being).  The information about this new device is leaked from a XDA forum member who bought a prototype of this device in Romania. This new LG gadget seems to have 4" IPS screen, Microsoft’s latest mobile OS, an 8 megapixel camera along with a single-core Snapdragon chip. Mystery still prevails about its internal storage and other customer applications.

LG Smartphone

Nothing is quite certain about this new device and its specifications. The Romanian tester who possesses this device states that it is expected to lunch in the first quarter of 2012. As this is a prototype there are chances that we will never see this device in the market.

The best places were LG will be showcasing this new entrant into the Smartphone world would be CES (Consumer Electronics Show) in January or MWC (Mobile World Congress) in February. If this LG ‘Fantasy’ comes alive there will be a big time competition with other handsets running on Window Phone 7.5 (Mango) like  HTC ‘Titan’, Samsung ‘Omnia W’ and Nokia ‘Lumia 800’.

Samsung Galaxy S and Tab, No Ice Cream Sandwich for You!

The latest version of Google’s Mobile Operating System - Ice Cream Sandwich or Android 4.0- will not be available for Galaxy S and the 7-inch Galaxy Tab. In late November Samsung promised an up-gradation of OS for both Galaxy S and Tab, which now seems to be broken. The reason behind this omission of up-gradation is due to the additional software features in these devices like TouchWiz, widgets, video calling and carrier software pack-ins. TouchWiz is given the major blame due to which these devices doest have enough RAM or ROM to contain all Samsung-designed accoutrements without affecting the quality of use.

Samsung Galaxy

The confusing fact is that Galaxy S is very much similar to the recently launched Galaxy Nexus which runs on Android 4.0. Samsung explains that “Nexus runs solely on Android without the addition of Samsung’s TouchWiz UI. Hence, the Galaxy S would probably not be able to cope with the implementation of ICS (Ice Cream Sandwich), along with TouchWiz”. As there is no problem with Galaxy S’s 1-GHz Cortex A8 processor or RAM, which are perfectly capable to run the Android 4.0, its Samsung’s UI that obstructs Galaxy S from having the ICS update.  This point out the fact that if TouchWiz is removed from Galaxy S, the device might be capable of running the vanilla version of Ice Cream Sandwich without much trouble even though the experience will not that perfect.

There is going to be a vex in the minds of Samsung Smartphone and Tablet users due the barring of Ice Cream Sandwich for Galaxy S and Tab. Users are expecting a third party developer to come up with some new techniques to make these devices portable with the new OS. Other players like Motorola and HTC will be coming up with their ICS updates for their Smartphone and Tablets in another three to six months.

Samsung's New Smart HDTV: Mobile Controlled, Remotes Ditched

Samsung will be showcasing its new Smart TV market at the Consumer Electronic Show (CES) Las Vegas, 2012. Samsung plans to make Smartphone controlled Smart TV like Goolge TV and omit the remote system from the TV culture.

Samsung Smart HDTV

The teaser video for the show demonstrates its 50 years of advancement in the television industry and concludes its future by making Smartphone’s and Smart TV’s compactable with each other. Google TV never acquired the desire expectation and people considered it to be a jumble of good ideas assembled in an unsorted, complex box.  As Samsung has raised its bar as an expert in the Smart TV and Android segment the expectations from this upcoming new Smart HDTV is also high. There is an uncertainty regarding the present line of Smart TV’s from Samsung which runs on its well know Bada OS, the speculation is that Samsung will be providing both the OS in the hardware to tackle its Bade OS and Android Smartphone users.

Apple’s yet to come Smart HDTV will be a stiff competitor for the Android TV. Along with this new vertical there is an unexplored industry ‘the Smart TV Apps’ and Samsung claims 2 million downloads for Smart TV.  Presently the potential of Smart TV market is uncertain; with the entry of Android and Apple into this industry in the coming year we will be able gather a high definition image.

Apples Demand from Developers: 10 Essential Rules

As any good designer in App Development will tell you, great implementation of an impressive feature is only the beginning. But for an iPhone app that has to get approved by Apple, presentation that goes hand in hand with logic, purpose, and structure of the app is vital.

Apples Demand from Developers: 10 Essential Rules

10 principles of designing good apps that could prove handy will gain your app an entry into the list apps approved by Apple are as follows:

1. Idea-mapping

You're not going to get anywhere until you have a clear idea for yourself of what you aim to make, so map your ideas, and set a clear purpose for this app.

2. Ergonomics

The UI should be spotless, so the user would want to tap them. Its buttons must be such that the user knows what they do at a glance, and most importantly, at the first time.

3. User's Needs

One might not know what one needs until one sees it on screen. Bear in mind what the user will and will not require on each page. Less clutter makes things a lot clearer, so do not fear white space.

4. Beauty

Transitions, animations and even the buttons every bit of visual feedback needs to be visually appealing, while fitting the theme of the app. Make sure the animations serve to clarify what the user could do with the apps.

5. Mobile = Tactile

The way the user gets to control touch is important. Make sure the control system you design is engaging yet touch-optimized. Make defaults intelligent, and yet easy to do away with, or easy to customize.

Apples Demand from Developers: 10 Essential Rules

6. Iteration

Keep in mind to not plan too much, but keep playing with the design as much as possible and gauge the UI's effectiveness.

It is vital to think of every possible button/element on every screen.

7. Clarity

Make clear to the user what he/she has control over. Jargons would sound impressive to a hard-core techie, but they would lose value to one who has no idea what you mean.

8. Elegance

The implementation of all the above should be smooth. Not only would the user-interface be good to look at it should also be easy-to-use. One such way to do this would be to use buttons that are of 'tap-able' size.

9. Polish the App Icon

The icon represents your App, so make sure it shows the user what he/she can do with it.

10. Honest pricing

Although it is tempting to price the app according to the work you put into designing it, it would be best to price it according to how often the user would turn to it. Test often with subjects, who would give you honest, yet varied feedback.
