Nokia 808: A Monstrous 41MP Camera Phone

The Mobile World Congress 2012 (MWC) kicked off at Barcelona on February 27 and Nokia announced a slew of new phones at the event. The company introduced a camera phone ‘Nokia 808’ with jaw dropping 41 megapixels of sensor.

The Nokia 808 is the largest announcement by the company at MWC. The high density 41 megapixels sensor camera comes with Carl Zeiss lens, Xenon flash and a new oversampling technology. This sensor enables to select from various megapixels options while taking pictures like 5 MP, 8 MP and up to 32 MP. It means the image will be with more pixels to work after zooming and cropping the image.

The camera can also record full HD videos at 1080 pixel and comes with Nokia Rich Recording that offers CD like audio quality. The Nokia 808 is the first mobile to have CD like audio quality without the support of external mic, previously CD like audio quality was only possible using an external mic.

The 808 is a Symbian Belle based phone, packed with 4 inch AMOLED touchscreen featuring its own CleatBlack technology for better viewing at sunlight. It’s powered by ARM single-core 1.3 GHz processor, 512 MB of RAM, 16 GB of internal storage, can be expandable up to 48 GB via microSD card. For connectivity it has Bluetooth, Near Field Connection (NFC), GPRS, Wi-Fi, 3G, micro USB and USB on-the-go support.

Along with Nokia 808 Pure View camera phone, the company has also introduced two new Windows Phone based Lumia smartphone – an entry level Lumia 610 and a high end Lumia 900.

The entry level Lumia 610 comes with 3.7 inch WVGA TFT touchscreen, 5 MP camera with autofocus and LED flash. It is powered 800 MHz processor and 256 MB of RAM. It also features 8 GB internal memory and for connectivity it has Bluetooth, USB, Wi-Fi, GPRS and GPS.

The Lumia 900 was already launched at Consumer Electronics Show 2012 in Las Vegas and now Nokia introduced the non-American version of Lumia 900 at MWC. 

The Nokia 808 Pure View is expected to be priced at Rs.29725, Lumia 610 for Rs.12484 and the Lumia 900 would be around Rs.31705. All these phones are expected to hit the market by May 2012.

Satellite Phones Security Code Cracked

Satellite telephony is believed to be impregnable and perfectly fool-proofed against eavesdropping. But, researchers now have cracked the encryption algorithms of the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI), which is used globally for satellite phones, and revealed significant weaknesses.

In less than an hour, and with simple equipment, scientists found the crypto key which is needed to intercept telephone conversations. Using open-source software and building on their previous research results, they were able to exploit the security weaknesses.

In some regions of the world, standard cell phone communication is still not available. In war zones, developing countries and on the high seas, satellite phones are used instead.

Here, the telephone is connected via radio directly to a satellite. This passes the incoming call to a station on the ground. From there, the call is fed into the public telephone network. So far this method, with the ETSI's encryption algorithms A5-GMR-1 and A5-GMR-2, was considered secure.

For their project, the inter-disciplinary group of researchers from the Horst Gortz Institute for IT-Security (HGI) at the Ruhr University Bochum (RUB), Germany, used commercially available equipment, and randomly selected two widely used satellite phones.

A simple firmware update was then loaded from the provider's website for each phone and the encryption mechanism reconstructed, according to a university statement.

Based on the analysis, the encryption of the GMR-1 standard demonstrated similarities to the one used in GSM, the most common mobile phone system.

"Since the GSM cipher had already been cracked, we were able to adopt the method and use it for our attack," explained Benedikt Driessen, from the Embedded Security at the RUB.

To verify the results in practice, the research group recorded their own satellite phone conversations and developed a new attack based on the analysis.

"We were surprised by the total lack of protection measures, which would have complicated our work drastically," said Carsten Willems, also from RUB.

Encryption algorithms are implemented to protect the privacy of the user.

"Our results show that the use of satellite phones harbours dangers and the current encryption algorithms are not sufficient", emphasized Ralf Hund of RUB.

'LG Prada 3.0' Arrives in India by Jan 2012

The united product of LG and Prada into the Smartphone market “LG Prada 3.0” is entering the Asian and European market in the first month of 2012. Presently the handsets have Android’s Gingerbread and LG confirms that the latest Android OS-Ice Cream Sandwich-will be available for the device in the future.

LG Smartphones will get Ice Cream Sandwich

LG articulated its up-gradation plans offering the latest version of Android- Android 4.0 or Ice Cream Sandwich- for its Smart-phones on Monday through its Facebook page.  The up-gradation will happen in two phases, in the second and third quarter of 2012 respectively. 

LG Optimus LTE, Prada by LG 3.0, LG Optimus 2X, LG Optimus Sol, LG myTouch Q and LG Eclipse are the models for which the up-gradation will be available in the second quarter ((April-June) of 2012. The process will be continued during the third quarter (July-September) of 2012 for the following models; LG Optimus 3D, LG Optimus Black, LG Optimus Big, LG Optimus Q2, LG Optimus EX.

In India only some of the above mentioned LG smart-phones are launched as LG have custom versions for each country like LG Optimus LTE as Nitro HD and Optimus 3D as Thrill 4G on AT&t in US.  The exact roll out date for the up-gradation is not confirmed yet. LG says “the dates will vary by the market, as each country can have different requirements, depending upon the carrier and smart-phone model”.

LG’s declaration regarding the latest OS update prompted some negative response from the consumers, they says “they haven’t got the Gingerbread up-gradation yet, even though the company promised a year back but the actual roll out happed only in August”.  This implies the fact that Android update is a time consuming process as it has to pass through Google, the Phone maker, and the carrier before it reaches the actual consumers, unlike Apple which monitors the whole progression and is able to roll out the update in a very short span of time.

All other major players like Samsung, Motorola and HTC has already declared their plans for updating their smart-phones with Android 4.0. We believe the struggling LG smart-phones will find a path to survive and compete in the world of Smartphone by this new up-gradation.

LG Smartphone 'Fantasy' with Windows Mango

 LG is coming up with a new Smartphone with Window Phone 7.5 (Mango) OS named as ‘Fantasy’ (for the time being).  The information about this new device is leaked from a XDA forum member who bought a prototype of this device in Romania. This new LG gadget seems to have 4" IPS screen, Microsoft’s latest mobile OS, an 8 megapixel camera along with a single-core Snapdragon chip. Mystery still prevails about its internal storage and other customer applications.

Nothing is quite certain about this new device and its specifications. The Romanian tester who possesses this device states that it is expected to lunch in the first quarter of 2012. As this is a prototype there are chances that we will never see this device in the market.

Software Bug in Nokia Lumia 800: Affects Battery Performance

The entry of Nokia into the Smartphone market faced its first jolt when it got comments from customers from different social media stating that some Lumia 800 devices is showing lower battery capacity than expected.  After doing and immediate research on the matter the company accepts that there is a software problem in certain variants of Lumia 800 which is preventing the phones ability to access full battery capacity. They state that there are no issues with the battery or the hardware.  Nokia says the problem persists only in the Lumia 800 and not in the cheaper Lumia 710.

Nokia confirms this to be a software bug which can be fixed easily and they plan to release the updated software by early 2012 which will also include many new enhanced applications for the device. Company also underlines the fact that they are ready to give replacement for those who do not want to wait for the software update.

Indian customers will be least affected by this bug as Nokia Lumia 800 reached Indian market a few days back and the shipment is just commenced. Nokia spoke person says “The units we are selling in India are from fresh stock and don't have any battery bug”.

Nokia’s effort to keep up its pride in the mobile handset market is struck with another blow now. But as for now the problems are identified, accepted and solutions are on the way, so the hope remains that the issues will be dissolved in 2012.

LG Unveils Optimus LTE Smartphone

LG unveiled world's first Optimus LTE (model L-01d) Smartphone in Japan via LTT DoCoMo. In 2010 the nation has entered into the field of LTE when LG in association with NTT DoCoMo introduced the first LTE data card in 2010. However, Japan is one of the largest LTE service globally. 

The red color Optimus LTE has got 2.3.5 Android Gingerbread OS. The touchscreen phone has 4.5 inches display with 720 pixel screen resolution. The device has two camera one is 1.3 mega pixel front facing camera and another is 8 mega pixels Camera with LED Flash. The dimension of the device is 132.9 x 67.9 x 10.4 and it has 1.5 GHz dual-core processor. The device has outstanding battery which is Li-Ion 1830 mAh. LG Prada 3.0 Smartphone Officially Announced

LG launched its new LG 3.0 Prada smartphone also known as LG Prada K2. This is the third smartphone which rolled out as part of the LG and Italian fashion label Prada partnership on the design level.

The LG Prada K2 handset will have a 4.3 inch NOVA display with WVGA 480x800 pixels of resolution. Under the slim 8.5mm chassis, the LG 3.0 Prada handset runs a dual-core 1.0 GHz Texas Instruments OMAP 4430 mobile processor with PowerVR SGX 540 graphics and offers 8 GB onboard storage.

Nokia Makes a Re-Entry to U.S. Market with $50 Smartphone

Nokia re-enters the U.S. market with the launch of Lumia 710, an entry–level Smartphone. The handset is targeted to the cost conscious buyers, as it can be availed for $50 from 11^th January onwards. The smartphone, offered by T-Mobile, is powered by Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 software.

Lumia 710 features a 3.7-inch screen, 1.4GHz single-core Qualcomm processor, 8 GB of storage and a 5-megapixel camera. The Nokia handset can also be availed with a turn-by-turn navigation built in as well as an ESPN app that is exclusive to Nokia's Windows phones. The device will be able to access speeds of 14.4 megabits per second on T-Mobile’s HSPA+ network. The T-Mobile version of the Lumia 710 will also have pre-loaded Netflix along with T-Mobile TV, a great video service. The phone can be availed mostly in White or Black.

The Lumia 710 is T-Mobile's second handset powered by Mango, which will accompany two other windows 7 devices, the HD7, T-Mobile’s first WP7 smartphone, and $99 HTC Radar 4G, marked already on sale. The Lumia 710 is the lower priced one of the two handsets already released in Europe and Asia with a price tag of 270 euros, equivalent to $351.

Samsung Galaxy Nexus Available on Verizon

Ever since we reviewed the excellent Samsung Galaxy Nexus Smartphone, everyone’s been wondering, when will it appear on Verizon? Now it’s finally official: The on-again/off-again Smartphone, which we think is the best Android phone ever produced, will be available on Verizon starting Thursday, Dec. 15 for Rs. 16,236 with a two-year contract. This Verizon version will be capable of using a 4G LTE network. If you are lucky enough to live in one of Verizon’s 190 markets with 4G LTE in the United States, the phone can download data at speeds of 5 to 12 Megabits (Mb) per second, and upload at speeds of 2Mb to 5Mb per second.

If Verizon’s network proves it to be as fast as the company says it is in your area, with this Smartphone you will be able to use the Internet at speeds similar to that of home broadband. The Verizon Samsung Galaxy Nexus will have the new Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) operating system on board, along with all the other high-tech capabilities that make it so appealing. For instance, the features that are the best were its 4.65-inch 720p screen that has a delightful curved design, and its 9.47mm-thin form factor that felt just right in the hand and pocket. According to Verizon, besides that Rs. 16,236 price for the phone, a subscription to a Verizon Wireless Nationwide Talk plan is required, with prices starting at Rs2,164 per month. In addition, you will need a data plan, priced at a minimum Rs. 1,624 per month for 2GB of data.

It is figured that the monthly tariff is not including the phone, fees and tax will start at Rs. 3,792, but if you figure in the cost of the phone, over a two-year contract you will be paying a total of Rs. 1,07,274, or Rs. 4,469per month, not including taxes and fees. Sounds expensive, but Smartphone’s are not cheap — even so, over a 2-year contract the Galaxy Nexus is about Rs. 20,591 cheaper than the lowest-priced Verizon iPhone 4S.

Maxx Mobiles announced the launch of a new multimedia feature phone, named Primo MX428, which promises longer battery life. This will be the latest addition to Maxx Mobiles' "Big Battery Series".  The bar designed Maxx Primo comes with an 1800 mAh battery, which offers up to 30 days of stand-by time.

To enhance the music experience while watching movies, videos and listening to music, Maxx Primo is equipped with big speakers. The phone also includes MMS/GPRS and incorporates multiple other features such as FM Radio, MP3/WAV/AAC/ format support for audio and 3GPP/AVI/MP4 format support for video as well as sharing and connectivity functions such as Bluetooth and USB.

Maxx also provides a free 4 GB memory card preloaded with audio and video content and has an expandable memory of up to 8 GB.

Nokia to Sell Its Subordinate Vertu

Nokia seems to sell its most magnificent subordinate mobile brand Vertu, which makes the luxurious handmade phones. Though the value is yet to be finalized but the annual revenue is estimated to be in between $268 million and $402 million.

Along with unveiling the Nokia Lumia Windows Phone based smartphones which has been well known for its wide range of products, now is also looking forward to enhance its focus for the betterment of the smartphone business. By selling this premium mobile brand Nokia is all setting to overcome and renovate its smartphone business globally which will make it capable to compete well with the others in race. The finance earned from this deal may help Nokia to expand its smartphone business.

With the launch of newer devices like Lumia, and the recent Windows 8 based tablet as well, Nokia is all planning to set itself financially to be in the race of smartphones. It is uncertain that how much the selling of vertu world help Nokia but by considering the brand image worldwide Vertu is not going to be cheap.

It is not yet finally announced by the Finnish device manufacturer, Nokia. So we may have to wait for the final announcement.
