5 Actual Ultrabooks in India

We all have seen lots of ultrabook entering the Indian market with different screen size and design. Are they actually fulfilling the ultrabooks criteria? The ultrabooks launched by different tech giants doesn’t fulfill the actual criteria specified by Intel; there are lots of variation in the specifications especially in terms of screen size, weight and thickness. So what are the criteria for ultrabooks? Intel defines it in a simple way: an ultrabook is supposed to be an 11 or 13 inch sleek and speedy laptop using SSD flash drive for storage, weight less than 1.4 kilograms and no optical drive.
But many ultrabook out in the market has 14 and even 15 inch screen, some uses SATA hard drive for storage and even have optical drive. Unfortunately ultrabook makers are not considering the Intel’s concept of ultrabook and are coming up with large sized screen to compete with each other. Check out these ultrabooks which actually follows the Intel’s concept.

The keyboard comes with an Advanced Cooling Technology from Intel that allows air to flow in through the keyboard and out of the sides. It also features Bluetooth 3.0, Wi-Fi, USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 ports and an integrated 1.3 megapixel HD webcam. It weighs just 1.2 kilograms and comes with a price tag of Rs.61000.

HP Folio 13 : An Ultrabook for All

HP introduced its first business class ultrabook ‘HP Folio 13’ which is designed to bridge the gap between professional and personal life. The Folio 13 features a thin and light design with strong security options and provides an ultimate mobile experience.

The ultrabook is powered by 1.6 MHz Intel Core i5 processor, 4 GB of DDR3 RAM, integrated with Intel Graphic 3000 chipset and it also includes Intel’s Rapid Start Technology (RST) which helps to save time while booting and runs fast. It comes with a 13.3 inch high definition BrightView display with 1366 x 768 pixels of screen resolution. The device measures less than 18 millimeters thin and weights just 1.49 kilograms.

The Folio 13 features a backlit keyboard, a full array of connectivity ports like USB 3.0 and 2.0, Ethernet and HDMI. It also has Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 128 GB Solid-State Drive (SSD), HP TrueVision high-definition webcam, Dolby Advanced Audio, supports multi-touch gesture support and is configured with Windows 7 operating system.

This ultrabook is expected to be available by December 2012 in U.S. for $899, there are no details about its price and availability in India, but it is expected come under a price bracket of Rs.45000 to Rs.60000.

Samsung's Ultrabooks Available on Web

Samsungs new Series 9 ultrabooks are now available for Pre-Order through online retail sites like Best Buy and CompUSA.

Samsung's Series 9 are the leading models defining the ultrabook category, the Series 9 includes 13 and 15 inch ultrabooks and the 15 inch model will be the first to hit the market in its size category.

These Series 9 ultrabooks were launched last month at Consumer Electronics Show 2012 in Las Vegas. Both 13 and 15 inch model ultrabooks are powered by 1.6 GHz Intel i5 processor, Intel HD 3000 graphics card, 128 GB SSD and runs on Windows 7 operating system. Both models have 1600x900 screen resolutions, 500 GB of hard disk, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, webcam, USB, built in SD card reader and HDMI port. The 13 inch model has 4 GB of RAM weighting just 1.13 kilograms and the 15 inch model comes with 8 GB of RAM weighting 1.7 kilograms.

Currently these ultrabook are available only in U.S. The 13 inch model will cost $1399 and the 15 inch model will cost $1499. In India the price of these ultrabooks is estimated to be around 55000 to 80000 and its availability is not confirmed yet.

Toshiba's New Satellite Series Laptops

Toshiba India launched two new series of laptop – sparkling Satellite series L740 and L750. The new sparkling series have been crafted for the customers who are cognizant about luxury and comfort giving them a choice of colours on the go and sparkling finish.

SATA hard drive capacities of up to 750GB also allow users to store hundreds of documents, photos, music and videos which further brighten up on the HD LED display. L740 series has 35.6cm (14) Clear SuperView LED screen and L750 series has 39.6cm (15.6) Clear SuperView LED screen.Two stereo speakers provide a rich audio experience, and the integrated web cam and microphone make face-to-face video conferences easy to set up.

The Satellite L740 and L750 series are equipped with a selection of interfaces including three USB 2.0 ports, Wireless LAN, Fast Ethernet LAN and a Multi-Card Reader. Users can also opt between Windows 7 Home Basic and Premium OS, suited to individual needs. Along with a 6-cell battery pack, the new Satellite series laptops also feature a USB Sleep-and-Charge port. The HDMI port can connect the laptop to a LCD/LED TV effortlessly, packing its video performance to play games and watching high-definition video, making them full-fledged mobile media laptops.

Dell Launches First Ultrabook 'XPS13'

Dell launched XPS13, its first member into the ultrabook crowd. Dell was working on this new laptop design even before Intel defined the concept of ultrabook, but it seems like Dell lagged a bit in the race.

XPS 13 is quite sleek and light weight and qualifies all the attributes to be called as an ultrabook. XPS13 has a 13-inch Gorilla Glass display which fits into a typical 12-inch laptop case, thanks to the thin-bezeled display used. The device weighs 2.9 pounds and has a thickness of 0.24 inches at its thinnest point and 0.71 inches at it’s thickest.   

Tim Peters, vice president at Dell’s consumer group, said the new machine emphasizes five features: small form factor, performance without compromise, usability, aesthetics, and cool temperature performance.

XPS 13 will be the first laptop to reach the market with the Intel’s Smart Connect technology which sporadically wakes up the sleeping PC to refresh the running network applications. Dell also offers an optional Trusted Platform Module (TPM) chip for enterprise use.  The device come with Core i3, i5, or i7 processors, a 128GB or 256GB solid state drive, and 4GB of RAM. XPS13 has a backlit keyboard with a large glass multitouch touchpad, a mini DisplayPort, an Ethernet jack and a high-quality audio that comes out of the keyboard. It also sports USB 3.0 port, USB 2.0 port and 128 gigabytes of flash memory which is upgradeable to 256 gigabytes.

This new player of Dell is supposed to reach the market by February coasting around $1000. Its availability and price is not confirmed yet for Indian market. We believe Dell will price XP13 in the same range of its Adamo XPS which cost around Rs.60000.

Samsung Series 5 Ultrabooks Up for Pre-ordering

Samsung launched its Series 5 Ultrabooks in Korea a month ago and is planning to enter the world market after CES 2012 where Samsung will be showcasing these new breed of laptops which are designed according to Intel’s specifications. U.S. market will be the first one to have these ultrabooks as the online shopping portal J&R showed the pre-order option on Wednesday which was taken back from the website after a short while.

According to PCWorld “the laptops were probably taken down because there’s no estimated arrival date for the laptops. J&R has ordered 50 of each model, but Samsung hasn’t provided a delivery date yet”.  Even if it’s not clear when these thin, light weight and speedy devices will be available, but their price has become quite evident.  The 13.3 inch model will be available for $899.99 and the 14inch model for $949.99. In India the price of these ultrabooks is estimated to be around Rs. 55000 to Rs. 60000 and its availability is not confirmed yet.

Both the variants of this ultrabook have similar specifications; dual-core 1.6GHz Intel Core i5-2467M processors, 4GB of DDR3 memory, 500GB hard disk/16GB SSD hybrid drive, 1366 x 768 resolution, integrated Intel graphics, WiFi, Bluetooth, HDMI output, a 4-in-1 card slot, two USB 2.0 ports. The 14inch gets an optical drive while 13inch gets a USB 3.0 instead.

Other players in the industry like Toshiba, Asus, HP, Acer and Lenovo will give a tuff competition to Samsung with their upcoming models of ultrabooks like Toshiba’s Portege Z830, Asus’s UX31, HP’s Folio, Acer’s Aspire S3, and Lenovo’s IdeaPad respectively.  Apple is also coming up with its new model of Macbook Air which will make the competition more killing.

Intel's Ultrabook: Is Your New Year Resolution?

2012 is being called the Year of the Ultrabook. Ultrabooks are a new breed of device, inspired by Intel, which combine the best features of a PC in a package which is thinner, lighter and more responsive. Intel has designed an industry-wide blueprint for Ultrabooks.

Ultrabooks are powered by Intel Core processors, so they have the power of a full PC, but they use a special chip which only sips power, so your battery lasts longer and you can stay on the go, and use your notebook like it was intended, for longer. Ultrabooks also take advantage of a bright idea called Intel Turbo Boost technology. Just like the turbo in your car, this cleverly provides a short burst of computing power only when it’s needed, allowing the chip to conserve power when it is not.

Current PCs may take a minute or more to wake up from deep sleep.  An Ultrabook takes less than seven seconds---every time. A study in the United States in 2010 found that 8 out of 10 adults admitted to getting frustrated by having to wait for their electronic devices; 62 per cent admitted to getting so frustrated they yelled at the device; and more than one third said slow technology had caused then to miss out on something. Intel researchers have labeled it as Hourglass Syndrome. So owe an Ultrabook and don’t give a chance for this Hourglass Syndrome to develop in you.

Acer to Launch 15 inch Ultrabook at Cheaper Price

After the satisfactory sales on 11 and 13 inch ultrabook models, Acer is now planning to step into the large screen market by launching 15 inch ultrabook.

The 15 inch ultrabook is being produced by Pegatron Technologies, a Taiwan based design and manufacturing company, reports DigiTimes. It also says that the 15 inch ultrabook will be available in the market at a cheaper price of $699 whereas many other ultrabooks have a higher price closer to $1000.

Previously Acer has launched the 13 inch ultrabook Aspire S3 at Rs. 49.000 ($899) and the interesting part is Acer’s upcoming new 15 inch ultrabook will be available just at $699 (price not available in India) which is cheaper than Aspire S3.

Acer has not mentioned the specification of its new ultrabook. However it might not run into Intel’s design specifications in support of power and thickness, says tech experts and the existing Acer’s ultrabook models are expected to sale 2.5 lakh to 3 lakh units by the end of this month.

Acer is expected to launch its new ultrabook in 2012. Therefore Apple is also in a race, working on its 15 inch MacBook Air version which will be launched in the first half of 2012.

Is Lenovo Launching Quad-core Tablet PC?

Lenovo is planning to launch Le Pad Tablet PC by 2012, reports Digitimes. After the introduction of Lenovo Le Pad Tablet on 23^rd August, Lenovo is planning to come out with a Quad-core Le Pad or Le Pad Tablet PC.

As per the report, the forthcoming tablet PC is going to hit the market on early 2012. The former Le Pad Tablet has Nvidia Tegra 2 dual core processor but this time Lenovo included Quad-core processor. Earlier Lenovo has introduced Android 3.1 Honeycomb, active digitizer stylus, IPS screen, storage up to 64GB in its ThinkPad Tablet which is also very eye catchy.  So it’s assumed that the upcoming Tablet PC will also bring success in the market. However, the Le Pad Tablet PC features and price are not yet mentioned.

Quad-core means four-Core Processors for example AMD Phenom II X4, Nvidia Tegra 3 and Intel Core i7. Dual-core processor will soon take a back seat because of Quad-core processor’s high performance. There are many upcoming devices equipped with Quad-core processor. Some of those devices are: HTC Edge, Samsung Galaxy SIII, and then Apple also testing with Quad-core processor in iPhone5. ASUS Eee Pad Transformer Prime Tablet will be out in the market by the end of 2011 which claims to be the first Quad-core processor so far. It can assume that if these all devices make their moves by 2012 then they would become the competitor of Lenovo Le Pad Tablet PC which has included Quad-core processor.

According to the report, sales of Lenovo’s Tablet are about 8.4 percent which just standing after Apple’s iPad in China and with the upcoming launch of Quad-core processor Tablet PC Lenovo plans to acquire more market in his home land.

Ultrabook: The Next Generation Laptops

Ultraportable laptops having a sleek, compact and light weight design combined with a superior computing speed is estimated to be the next generation of tablet computers.  Intel claims that the new form of computer notebook will replacing the laptops and will change the face of computing by 2013. Intel South Asia's Director of Marketing Sandeep Aurora says "Our focus for next few years is going to be on energy efficiency, security and connectivity. Ultrabook as category was launched this year. This will change face of computing in next two to three years,"

Ultrabooks are available with Core i3, Core i5 and i7 along with Windows OS and within a price range of Rs. 44000 to Rs. 90000.

Asus Zenbook UX 31, HP Folio 13, Asus UX 21, Lenovo IdeaPad U300S, Acer Aspire S3 and Toshiba Portage Z830 are the leading Ultrabooks in the market. All of them have Core i5 or i7 except Toshiba Portage Z830 which makes it lag a bit the consumer market. Asus Zenbook UX 31 and Lenovo U300S top the preference chart due to its sketched specifications and battery life.

Ultrabooks are meant for long standby life, quick boot, instant on wake up time, good performance, good battery life and can be carried like an envelope. The initial crop of Ultrabook has satisfied all the above criteria which include every aspect of a desirable portable device and have gained an expected level of satisfaction and therefore the Ultrabooks futures looks promising.
