5 Famous Desi Rock Bands in India

Incorporating Indian music elements and mainstream rock, Indian rock music has got its name in India’s popular music genre. Competing with India’s other popular northern and southern classical music; Indian Rock music has produced a number of rock bands and artists. Among the creative industries, music has a key role in both cultural and economic terms. Historically, 1980s had witnessed the rise of Indian Rock bands. Rock bands of India had come up with a paradigm of cultural shift in terms of economic values. Rock Machine, Easy Meat, Holocaust, Morgue, Dorian Platonic, Grassroots Revival, Phoenix and Dark Crusader are some of the earlier Indian Rock bands. 1990s witnessed the influence of Britpop, punk, thrash in the Indian Rock music styles. The Indian sub-genre of fusion also comes with a blend of rock music with ancient Indian music and it is known as the odd Indian style of rock.


Rock Bands

Today, there are a number of Indian rock bands in India which gives an ample opportunity for composers, performers, publishers, record companies and many other players in the creative industry.


1. Parikrama:

Parikrama

The Delhi-based Rock and Roll band was formed in the 1990s. Parikarama includes Nitin Malik (vocals), Sonam Sherpa (Guitar), Saurabh Chaudhary (Guitars), Chintan Kalra (Bass), Subir Malik (Keyboards), and Srijan Mahajan (Drums) in the group. The experimentation of sound with every possible music instruments has brought out a soul-manifesting outburst of sound in their performance. The band got fame for its astounding lyrics and the fusion of traditional and western-instruments in the music. Many of its songs such as ‘But it rained’ and ‘One’ address strong social issues.

2. Avial:
Avial

Named after the south Indian dish ‘Avial’, the band is originated from Kerala. Formed in 2003, the Avial band has its main foot on alternative rock music. The band shot to fame for merging the native Kerala folk music and alternative rock. Consists of Tony John (vocals), Rex Vijayan (guitars), Mithun Puthanveetil (drums), and Binny Isaac (bass), the uniqueness of the band is they focus on native language rock performances.


3. Thermal And A Quarter (TAAQ):

Formed as a college band in 1996 at Bangalore, TAAQ is famous for its original music. It was one of the first Asian music groups which made their music presented under Creative Commons (based in U.S.) which legally devoted to expand various varieties of creative works accessible for public. Currently it consists of three members- Bruce Lee Mani (Guitars / Vocals), Rajeev Rajagopal (Drums), and Prakash KN (Bass). Challenging various music classifications, TAAQ has encompassed different music styles from Carnatic to Jazz-funk.  It is renowned for being politically active and having a high social conscience.

4. Tripwire:
Tripwire

This Mumbai based Punk Rock band was formed in 2002. Their debut album ‘StandBy’ was released in 2009. Just like TAAQ, through their college musical fests, Tripwire established itself in the music world. The three men army of Amey (Vocals / Guitars), Jack (Drums / Electronics), and Shaggy (Bass / Vocals) already featured a number of series like, We are the Scene 1 & 2, Enter Exist Exit, and Stupid Ditties 2.

 
5. LBG (Little Babooshka’s Grind):
LBG

Though, in 1996, the Chennai based Little Babooshka’s Grind had came up, the band stopped performing other’s songs from 1999 and today they are well-known among Indian rock music world for merging different musicals and performing originals. Also their sound tracks are known for creating the bouncy and exciting music. Arjun Janakiram (Vocals / Guitars), Avneet Janakiram (Guitars), Aum Janakiram (Vocals / Bass), Hari Boskey (Keys), and Marky Spitnik (Drums) are the LBG members.
